On 01 MAY 1903, he was the 2nd Vice President of the Kensington Library Society.
In 1905, he built an addition to his store where he sold cigars and confectionery. William Ritchie, his brother-in-law, who had been a clerk at the Kilby House for the past three years left and joined him as a partner.
James was Selectman in 1910, 1911 and 1914.
