A Boston merchant, he dealt with the Connecticut and New Haven colonies. Bought over 1000 acres owned by his father-in-law, Jonathan Gilbert, including Daniel Clark's tract. He constructed and laid out roads, including Christian Lane, Berlin. Built tenement houses. Belcher Brook, named after Capt. Belcher, flows under the railroad twice, under Norton Rd. west of Lower Lane to north and into the Sebethe River. Dam across the brook constructed at a very early date at what has been known as Risley Pond.
