Jonathan Gilbert, a tavern-keeper in Hartford and deputy collector of customs for Conn., was given in 1661 by the General Court, a choice of 300 acres wherever he desired. He bought out similar properties that were given to Daniel Clark and John Moore (they had a total of 400 acres). In 1673 Gilbert bought out Clark. He then owned land from the s.e. boundary of what is now New Britain to the border of Meriden (then called Meridan or Merideen.) His daughter, Sara, married Capt. Andrew Belcher (see his record for details)
