1 Victor died at New Britain General Hospital of cancer at age 77 years. His obituary states that he was "civil engineer, writer, and a leader in charitable and cultural life in New Britain for more than 30 years". He grew up in Easton, PA. He began a three year accelerated course combined with the US Navy officer's training program at MIT in 1940. In 1943, he received a B.S. degree and a commission as a lieutenant in the US Navy and was assigned a tour of duty in the Navy shipyards in Philadelphia. He was a design engineer and chief engineer with the Berlin Steel Construction Company from 1945 to 1977. He was the author of "Directory of American Bridge Building Companies 1840 - 1900" which was published in 1984. He wrote for professional journals on 19th century metal bridges and their builders. He was a member of the Society for Industrial Archaeology. Beginning in 1960 he served on the board of the New Britain Institute. He was a trustee of the New Britain Museum of American Art, having served as chairman and treasurer. He also served on the Berlin Zoning Board of Appeals and the board of New Britain General Hospital. He volunteered his time and expertise to many organizations during construction expansion projects, including the YWCA, Boys' and Girls' Club, Berlin school board, New Britain Public Library, and Youth Museum. He worked with the architect and builders on the construction of First Church of Christ, Congregational, in New Britain completed in 1960. He was survived by his wife, Jane; a daughter, Susan and her husband Carl Moore of Mendon, MA; a daughter, Polly of Middlebury, VT; a brother, Richard, in New Hope, PA; and two grandaughters, Heather Darnell of London, Eng. and Elise Gott of Mendon, MA. Carlson Funeral Home of New Britain was in charge of arrangements. A memorial service was held at First Church Christ, Congregational in New Britain.
