He was of Kensington and Key Colony Beach, FL. He attended New York City schools and graduated from Pace Institute, NYC in 1936 with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration; graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, OH in 1942; and earned an MA in Speech and Drama from Miami University in Ohio, following WWII. He then accepted a position in New Britain in radio news and in 1952 joined the advertising department of Stanley Works, retiring in 1982 as the director of Public Relations. He was also an officer in the Public Relations Society of America. Edward had been very active in community and service organizations in the New Britain area. He was a past president and trustee of the New Britain Youth Museum; a past president of the Berlin Visiting Nurses Association; and served on ithe Board of Directors of the Public Health Nursing Service from 1968 - 1969. He was a member of the Rotary Club and was active in local theater groups and a member of the Shuttle Meadow Country Club for close to 50 years.
He was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Army as Staff Sergeant in Forward Supply Administration, serving overseas in campaigns in North Africa and Italy from 1943 - 1945.
He was a member of South Congregational Church in New Britain.
He died at age 84 years. Survivors included his wife,Helen; his sister, Dorothy Koenig, and her husband, Robert, of Scotia, NY; a brother, Robert and his wife, Grace, of Panguitch, UT; a daughter, Cheryl [Benfield] Lee and her husband, David, and their son, Christopher, all of Brookfield, VT; a son , Edward S. Benfield II, MD and his wife, Susan and their daughters, Kate and Julia of Fort Mill, SC; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial celebration and internment were in Washington at the convenience of the family; no calling hours. Contributions in his name could be made to the American Cancer Society or South Congregational Church.
