Barbara died at age 50 at Hartford Hospital. She had lived in Kensington for the last 23 years of her life. After graduating from Central Connecticut State University she taught at St. Paul School in Kensington. The last ten years she taught in the Hartford Public School system. Her most recent position was at Maria Sanchez Elementary School in Hartford. She had taught at both the elementary and secondary levels. She was a member of St. Paul Church in Kensington. Barbara was survived by her mother, Sophie [Koharsik] Petkis; her husband, James Michael Aleksunes; two daughters, Lauren Marie Aleksunes and Carrie Ann Aleksunes; and two brothers, Bernard Petkis, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Westerly, RI and David Charles Petkis and his wife, Anita of Tolland. She was predeceased by her father, Bernard Walter Petkis. Funeral services and calling hours were at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Paul Church in Kensington. Memorial donations to Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Hermosa Beach, CA..
