Wallace records that he was "[a person] of considerable distinction . . . a celebrity of the late 19th and 20th centuries." He was born and raised in Berlin and attended the Worthington Academy as a child, went on to study at the Hart School for Boys in Farmington and studied art abroad in Europe. He taught at his studio in New York City for fifteen years and later at Miss Porter's School in Farmington. He was a portrait and landscape painter, wrote humorous pieces about his childhood days in Berlin for the Farmington Magazine. His works were exhibited in the Louvre, National Academy of Design in NYC, Smith College and he received numerous medals at exhibitions for his paintings, including one in Paris. He painted portraits of Miss Porter, Senator Mark Hanna and President McKinley. He was a patron of the arts and an ornithologist.
