North reports that Lafayette and his father accompanied Timothy Butler to West Mountain in Kensington in search of a fox, on a Sunday ca. 1847. Mr. Butler's dog had run the fox to his den under a large rock and as the dog was digging away the dirt, Lafayette crawled under the rock to help him. He and the dog were crushed to death. Every able-bodied man and boy rode or walked to Kensington to help free him. A solemn sermon was preached that afternoon by the Rev. Mr. Woodworth.
