A member of the Kensington Congregational Church, a complaint is registered in the church records on May 6, 1784, reading in part: "he was accused of intemperance in drinking of spirituous liquors. He pled not guilty." He was found guilty and at the same meeting a committee was formed to "confer with [him] and see if he could not be persuaded to take make Christian satisfaction … "
At a meeting on July 1, 1784 it was reported that he had made a public confession and thus had "settled the matter."
