North records that he was a lawyer who came to Hartford aabout 1647 and had "a good education and ability." Shortly before his death he made a will which gave his house and property to his unmarried daughter, Rebecca. The will came into dispute when Rebecca married two years later. Her mother Ann was the executrix and a marshall served a complaint on Ann, summoning her into court by her son-in-law who claimed that his wife was "like to be dispossessed of what his father gave his wife" [i.e. Rebecca]. Mrs. Burnham sent a quaint reply to the court explaining that she had been "in a Ssorrowfull condishon . . . Weke and Lame a long time [sic]" and that her son-in-law took the will without her permission, writing that he "puit it in his picit with out my Leveffe [sic]"
