"Came from New Haven in 1880 with F.H. Stiles of North Haven. Bought out Stiles a few months later. Produced 190, 000 brick per day. During busy season employed as many as 150 Poles and Italians. Had best equipment possible to load bricks on nearby railroad cars for shipment. Power obtained by two engines, one 200 horsepower and the other 100 horse power. Mr. Merwin died in 1894. Plant managed by E.S. Morse, administrator of estate. The stock company formed having $75,000 as capital with R.C. Merwin Pres. and E.S. Morse, treasurer. Depth of clay in feet to east side 60' (brown clay)." BPLH Catalog card
