Came from Glastonbury. His wife, Julia, came from church in Hadlyme. He was installed as the 5th Minister of Kensington Congregational Church on 10 MAY 1860. When told by Postmaster, Samuel Upson, that Fort Sumter had been fired on by South, "Mr. Hillard put aside the day's sermon and delivered a patriotic sermon of intense ferver." The women were so moved by his eloquence that they met the very next week and started sewing a national flag which hung from the belfry throuhout the Civil War. It still exists. In MAR 1861 was dismissed to Glastonbury Congregatonal Church.
