Was a ward of Ozias Roberts. He became a Congressman and a member of the law firm of Waldo & hyde in Hartford and was elected to the Chief Magistrary in 1877. The law giving wives equal property rights with their husbands was adopted largely through his insistence. The first memorial to be placed on the grounds was the bronze statue of Richard (1818-1884] of Hartford who was governor from 1877 - 1879, at the time of the dedication of the building. He worked his way through Yale and became emminent at the bar and one of the Democrats, who heartily supported the Union during the Civil War.
