Jack received his basic training at Camp Hall, CO and was stationed later at Camp Swift, TX. Graduate of Berlin High School, member of school football team. Prior to army service he was employed by Niles, Bement & Pond in Hartford. He was sent overseas in Dec. 1943.
He was the last Berlin serviceman to die in WWII. He was killed in action in Italy, where he served on the ski patrol. The troops had not yet received the word of the armistice. He was given a posthumous citation for heroic achievement.
He lived next door to Richard Patterson who was the first Berlin serviceman to die in the war. Patterson was killed during the attack on the Arizona in Pearl Harbor. |
